Nathan the Wise - Theater in der Hugenottenhalle, Neu-Isenburg - 2for1-Tickets
"Nathan the Wise" is the play of the hour when it comes to the still unresolved religious conflicts of our time. With great foresight, Lessing not only describes the claim to sole representation of the three monotheistic world religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, he also offers a clever, ever-valid solution.
Sultan Saladin asks the rich Jewish merchant Nathan for a loan and asks for his view on the true religion. Nathan responds with the famous ring parable: a father should bequeath his precious ring to his favorite son, but if he loves everyone equally, he has copies made. The sons argue about which ring is genuine, and a judge advises them to act as if their ring is the real one, only to clarify the truth later. This is the core of Lessing's message that is still valid today: a religion must live its values here and now. It is only in humane action, in lived social practice, that its endurance is proven.
