The Giersch Museum at Goethe University (MGGU) invites you to discover the multifaceted oeuvre of the painter and graphic artist Louise Rösler (1907–1993)! Her work represents an important position in German art of the 20th century. With over 160 exhibits - including paintings, collages, color and felt-tip pen works, watercolors, pastels and prints - the exhibition presents the artist's powerful and extensive oeuvre.
Born in Berlin in 1907, Louise Rösler grew up in an art-loving family and undertook extensive study trips through southern Europe after completing her training in Munich, Berlin and Paris. The theme of the big city fascinated her throughout her life and is a recurring theme in her work. Louise Rösler worked figuratively until the 1930s. After moving to Königstein im Taunus in 1943 due to the war, she developed a more abstract and freer style that emphasized color and form as sensual elements and combined them into dynamic pictorial worlds. Rösler took up the urban not only in her motifs, but also in her choice of materials. She combined scraps of paper and candy wrappers found on the street with graphic and painterly elements. Until the end of her life in 1993, the artist used unusual found objects for her work, full of creativity and ingenuity: a cupboard wall became a painting surface, blister packaging became a pictorial element and shoe trees became the starting material for sculptures.
