Hölderlin invokes the rain from heaven in HYPERION. He wishes for the growth of a new human race. Everyone is asked to participate, not to be lazy, not to wait and see. He does not want to leave the spirit of a people to the state. "The fact that we are now sleeping in our hospitals testifies to the imminent, healthy awakening." In the novel, Hyperion fails to achieve this utopia. Humans do not make it; every flower, every tree, every wave is more perfect for him than his own torn species. And like his Greek title hero, Hölderlin also withdraws from the human community, living in his Tübingen tower as a "hermit in Swabia" - leading a life immersed in contemplation, in harmony with nature and its great rhythms.
