A house on a Mark Brandenburg lake - and how an entire century rages within it. The house is the setting for almost a dozen biographies, stories and fates from the 1920s to the present day. The house and its inhabitants experience the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the war and its end, the GDR, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the post-reunification period. Jenny Erpenbeck gives each individual fate its own literary form, each unfolding its own drama, tragedy and happiness. Together they form a panorama of the last century that disturbs, delights, unsettles and reconciles.
