In 1903, Gertude Stein moved to Paris and gathered literary and artistic greats such as Picasso, Matisse and Hemingway around her. In 1907, she met her future partner Alice B. Toklas - or, as Ernest Hemingway used to mockingly call her: "a companion". Together they ran what was probably the most important intellectual salon of the time: for 30 years, Gertrude Stein's apartment in the Rue de Fleurus was the meeting place for the Parisian art elite. The two women stayed together for the rest of their lives.

"Gertrude Stein and a Companion", which won Best Play at the Edinburgh Festival and the Sydney Theatre Festival, spans decades and takes aim at numerous figures from the world of the two women: from Gertrude's brother Leo, Hemingway and Picasso to American reporters and German soldiers. In the play, author Win Wells explores a relationship that must have been taboo in the first half of the 20th century and led to much speculation during the two women's lifetimes. He traces the history of the couple and their illustrious visitors in just as unusual a way as their lifestyle itself was: (as) a journey through time, with foresight and retrospection, full of famous personalities, with official contemporary documents of a bygone era and at the same time also highly private insights into a life beyond social convention.
